Ty Causey — Hypnotic

Oct. 10, 2019

(R&B)

While I have steered away from projects that are strictly R&B/soul as opposed to being integrated with at least a touch of c-jazz, Ty Causey is one artist I’ve found to be an exception to my rule, only because of the texture of his music and the way it can easily strike a c-jazz chord in many a jazzer’s heart. His latest release, Hypnotic, is built on that same smooth foundation that compelled me to write reviews on his previous Tyangles and Down II Earth releases. There’s a sweet sway and bounce to this music that reaches you – wherever you live in the worlds of R&B and c-jazz.

Causey’s vocals are effortless and fluid and blend so nicely with the mood-setting grooves presented here. There’s a sexy, romantic attitude and a call to move you to the dance floor in that slick mid-to-up-tempo way.

Tracks that should capture your ear include the lead track “Don’t Wanna Be Single,” “You’re a Superstar,” the title track, the peppy ”Yo Energy,” “Till the Wheels Fall Off,” the chilled “Anytime,” the funky “Freaky Situation,” “Let’s Dance,” and more.

One of the attractants of Causey’s music for me is how he captures that clean, innocent love theme of yesteryear and weaves its magic into today’s fabric of cool.
If it’s c-jazz you seek, it ain’t here on this one, but what is here will take on a soulful finger-snappin’ journey to when R&B was a lot more than a collection of lewd suggestions and a twerkin’ vibe. Granted, there’s a bit of sameness about certain tracks on this album (still, if that approach to music worked so well for groove icons like Hardcastle, it certainly works here). This is soul music fit for the Luther/Teddy lovers of the world. Sensuous, alive, and relevant. Great effort. – Ronald Jackson
