The Justus Brothers – The Justus Brothers

Oct. 10, 2019

Welcome to the c-jazz/soul scene a group of guys who’ve performed or recorded with everyone from Booker T. Jones to ZZ Top to Solomon Burke to Neil Young – and that’s just a small sample of the who’s who with whom they’ve done work. Meet The Justus Brothers, a Memphis-based soul/jazz band that’s hit the music scene with a huge bang. Here with its debut self-titled release, the band offers tasteful, funky originals and covers that are guaranteed to grab and hold your attention.

The band is comprised of saxman/flutist Pat Register, bassist Steve Smith, drummer Steve Potts, keyboardist/pianist Jason Clark, and guitarist Niko Lyras. They are joined here by a nightingale by the name of Katrina Anderson on Michael McDonald’s “I Keep Forgetting,” trombonist Jason Yasinsky, and trumpeter Scott Thompson.

The band’s composition and cover selection skills are more than a little noteworthy. With originals like the Latin-flavored and hot “Sabroso,” the bluesy “Miss L,” the slick and subtly funky mid-tempo “Hip Pocket,” the funky take-no-prisoners “King’s Strut,” and classy covers like Sting’s “Fragile/Fields of Gold,” Booker T & The MGs’ “Chinese Checkers,” and the previously mentioned Michael McDonald’s ”I Keep Forgetting,” these cats show that they know their way around a groove and obviously plan to stick around to deliver more goodies in the future.

With a promising and solid 9-track project like this as their debut, you’ll want to keep an ear open for these guys as they begin their stroll down C-jazz Avenue. Quality stuff. – Ronald Jackson
