Jeff Johnson & Phil Keaggy — Cappadocia

Feb. 1, 2019

(New Age)

As I have written here many times before, the beauty and magic of a well-done new age album or track is a thing to behold with deep wonder and appreciation. There are so many moving intangibles that stir, excite, soothe, caress, and whisper to the soul. Such is the case with the latest release called Cappadocia by keyboardist/percussionist/vocalist Jeff Johnson and guitarist/bassist/percussionist/vocalist Phil Keaggy. This is a musical voyage beyond any earthly destination. It soars to the heavens and to the tender places in the heart that cannot be reached by any means other than a great melody.

I had the pleasure of reviewing an earlier collaboration between Johnson and flutist Brian Dunning on the release called Eirlandia, another treat in beauty and depth. Cappadocia just proves that Johnson gravitates toward the potential for creating collages that sing ever so sweetly and expressively. He obviously felt the strong pull of that potential when he sat down with Keaggy to pen and record this aural gem.

From the mesmerizing lead and title track to “Quo Vadis” to a trip through the “Valley of Swords and Roses” to the rose petal-soft “Parousia (A Presence)” to the stirring finale “Trinity” and all tracks in between, this demonstration of class, poise, style, and spiritual peace needs only get your attention for a moment to convince you to take time out of your busy day to breathe, to absorb, to mentally and spiritually engage, and move away from what has been disturbing to you and head to a place where only serenity is welcome. A walk through this musical field is all you’ll need to clear the pollution from around you and sense the clean of life. A++ effort indeed. — Ronald Jackson
