Dirk K – Blu Sky

June 24, 2018

Well, it probably doesn’t get smoother than this. Guitarist Dirk K is back on the scene with Blu Sky, an album of light and airy grooves guaranteed to transport you to Smoothville with his silky delivery and feathery, often bluesy, riffs.

Joined here on separate tracks by bassists Al Turner and Darryl Williams, Dirk K offers up delicious melodies and snappy rhythms as he strolls through the album with poise and guitar excellence.

Leading off with a finger-snappin’ yet measured and laid-back piece called “Can’t Let Go” (this track reminds one of the slick grooves often heard on some of the late Ronny Jordan’s work), the guitarist proceeds to lean into his spirited title track with purpose and follows that with pleasant “tasties” like the slow, blue soul of “All There Was,” the cleverly-timed fusiony “Drop That,” a cool cover of Sting’s “Fragile,” the lightly funky and very interesting “DaaFuunk,” and the sweetly soulful “Change Is Gonna Come” (nope, not the one that comes to mind. This one is all Dirk K).

Dirk K is one of those indie artists who obviously takes his talent seriously and offers variations in style to demonstrate his mastery of not only the instrument but his understanding of the depth and breadth of jazz and the “umbrella” that it is. His is a refreshing tale of how jazz can feel. I think jazz masters in the industry would give this cat an approving nod. Good stuff. – Ronald Jackson
