Dave Muse — Forgotten Journey

July 28, 2018

As I first listened to “Love Will Find a Way” on this cool smooth project from veteran flutist/saxman Dave Muse called Forgotten Journey and read his bio, it became perfectly clear to me why that rhythmic, exotic Latinesque style was so familiar to me. As a once avid follower of the bright and airy pop/rock band Firefall (which Muse co-founded), I had experienced this suave flavor of music oh-so-many times decades ago. Small world indeed as Muse is now introducing his jazzy, often Latin-flavored style to the world of c-jazz.

Already a Colorado Music Hall of Famer, Muse’s crossover move is a refreshing one that should definitely net him praise as an equally competent player in the jazz arena.

Joining artists like Craig Chaquico, Neal Schon, Jim Peterik, and others who’ve made such a crossover – some quite successfully — Muse makes his presence felt in a very hearty way.

Contributing to this release are veteran smooth jazz keyboardist Ron Reinhardt (who also co-produced the album and co-wrote most of the tracks here) and guitarist Nate Najar, among others.

This soulful, jazzy, and flute-laced project is loaded with all manner of appeal and has a certain way of stirring your musical sensibilities and bringing you to that satisfying place where solace and groove live harmoniously together. It was that way with the Firefall I remember, and it’s that way now.

The album packs grooves like the light but lively title track, the Brazilian-tinged “Over the Horizon,” the previously mentioned tasteful “Love Will Find A Way,” the rousing “Que Sabor,” and many others, including the solid and kickin’ finale “Twilight Delight.”

Take the time out to listen to this well-done album and bask in its all-embracing glow. It’s masterfully composed and performed by one who would know about masterful compositions, having over 40 years of making and performing tantalizing music under his belt. Two thumbs up. Welcome aboard, Mr. Muse, and thanks for bringing that magnetic Firefall aura with you. – Ronald Jackson
