Dave Bradshaw Jr. — Flipside

Aug. 10, 2019

Keyboardist Dave Bradshaw Jr. delivers a really smooth and balanced album here with Flipside, an album that embraces that feel-good vibe like a lover. This is a polished, very melodic bit of musical bliss as the keyboardist dances through some truly classy material with definition.

Bringing along the Earth, Wind, & Fire horns, saxtress Jessy J, and the mixing and mastering skills of saxman Darren Rahn, Bradshaw—who also composed and produced all of the material—places his finger right on the pulse of what moves, excites, and soothes the c-jazz fan.

Jumping right out with a finger-snappin’, charismatic lead track “Miles Away,” the party never stops as Bradshaw touts his stuff on such tracks as the mid-tempo, Latin-jazzy “Latina Love,” the movin’, up-tempo title track, a Boz Scaggs-like funky stepper called “Forever Grey” featuring the EWF horns, the sexy, made-for-the-night R&B-laced “Miss You Girl,” the mid-tempo “Diddy” (a track dripping with sexy funk and attitude), and much more.

Whether you’re looking for that solid funk groove, some feel-good up-tempo thang, or a romance-starter, Bradshaw has you covered here from every angle with really tasteful material that, as I mentioned earlier, does a great job of balancing moods and feels. Everything here is ear-friendly and caresses the soul in that special “don’t you just love good music” way. There’s jazz, soul, and structure here. You can’t help noticing its presence from the moment you press “play.”
Treat yourself to what feels and sounds like exactly what you need on a day when you could use a lift like this – and even when you don’t. A+ effort indeed. – Ronald Jackson
