Chris Standring — Sunlight

Apr. 21, 2018

For two decades, veteran English guitarist Chris Standring has been working his special concoction of jazz on c-jazz lovers everywhere. It’s been a cool, sassy, and funky ride, and it continues here with his latest release, Sunlight. The album highlights his signature suave and distinctive style and the reminiscently vibrant sounds of the UK acid jazz scene of the early nineties which saw the likes of the late guitarist Ronny Jordan rise to the attention of c-jazz aficionados.

The well-produced album features such guests as bassists Jimmy Haslip and Andre Berry, saxman Brandon Fields, drummer Dave Karasony, iconic pianist Bob James, and pianist/keyboardist John Novello, to name a few. Combined with his guitar mastery, there is simply no way Standring could miss with the stellar talent here helping the project shine so brilliantly.

A touch of the character and finesse of the late Chuck Loeb can also be found here on tracks like “Don’t Adjust Your Set” and “The Principle of Pleasure,” giving this project a handsomely eclectic feel.

Other tracks of note include the slick, strutting lead track “Static In the Attic;” the poppin’ up-tempo “Aphrodisiac;” the snappy, smooth “Love Street,” the casual moonlight-dipped “The Revisit,” a finger-snappin’ gem featuring the sweet and stirring vocals of English singer Mica Paris, and an effective cover of the Beach Boys’ “God Only Knows.”

Standring continues to demonstrate the clarity of his vision and of the road he travels on his musical journeys, and it’s always deliberate and full of auditory adventure. Sunlight continues down that path. An excellent continuation of the Chris Standring story. – Ronald Jackson
